Cannes [France]: Fans of Indiana cinema rejoiced with pride as filmmaker Shyam Benegal's film 'Manthan' was screened at the ongoing 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival on Friday evening.

Inspired by Verghese Kurien's pioneering milk cooperative movement, who ran 'Operation Flood', transforming India from a milk-deficient country into the world's largest producer of milk and dairy products, 'Manthan' was released in 1976 and featured the late The actress was Smita Patil. The visionary social entrepreneur, who transformed Gujarat into a global dairy capital, was also the founder of the billion-dollar brand 'Amul'. This film, which brought about this revolutionary change on celluloid, is inscribed in golden letters on the pages of the history of Indian cinema, which is almost more than 100 years old.

Naseeruddin Shah, his wife Ratna Pathak Shah, Prateek Babbar, actor and son of Smita Patil, Nirmala Kurien, daughter of the father of White Revolution Dr Verghese Kurien, Anita Pati Deshmukh and Manya Patil Seth, sisters were present at the screening.Smita Patil and Dr. Jayen Mehta, Managing Director, Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. Producers of the film 'Manthan' are celebrating the Cannes premiere with praise coming in from all quarters. Even Amul India, known for its creative advertisements, has joined the ranks of well-wishers. In its typical style, Amul created a doodle to honor this achievement
In the composition, the Amul Girl, representing late actress Smita Patil, can be seen holding a glass of milk in one hand and bread and butter in the other. The doodle reads, "Our butter, our churning...Amul toast of Cannes."

Reacting to the creative, a social media user commented, “Haha love the way Amul celebrates all achievements.,

Another wrote, "Manthan, Manthan."

Ahead of the screening of the film, Nirmala Kurian, daughter of Dr. Jayen Mehta and Verghese Kurian, highlighted the important role of Amul at the India Pavilion. Not only was Amul's support revealed in bringing 'Manthan' back in a big way, but the cooperative society's unique involvement in the making of the film was also revealed. 'Manthan', set in Gujarat, was the first Indian film to be completely crowdfunded by 500,000 farmers who donated Rs. 2 each. Kurien co-wrote the film's script with Vijay Tendulkar.'Manthan' won two National Film Awards in 1977 – for Best Feature Film in Hindi and for Best Screenplay for Tendulkar. It was also India's official entry in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 1976 Academy Awards.
