This came on the day his lawyer announced that Amritpal Singh would contest the Lok Sabha elections from Punjab's Khadoor Sahib constituency.

According to officials, Amritpal Singh's father Tarsem Singh, uncle Sukhchai Singh, wife Kirandeep Kaur and other family members reached Dibrugarh in the morning and some of them visited him in the Central Jail a few days later.

Jail officials said those meeting Amripal Singh were subjected to extensive security checks at the gate and were allowed to meet him after completing necessary paperwork.

Amritpal Singh's family traveled with Amarjeet Singh, father of Singh's close aide Papal Preet Singh.

Amritpal Singh's lawyer Rajdev Singh Khalsa met him in Dibrugarh jail on Wednesday and asked him to contest the Lok Sabha elections. "I met Amritpa Singh and during our meeting, I asked him to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Khadoor Sahib. He agreed to the proposal and intends to contest the elections as an independent candidate."

Amritpal Singh, chief of 'Waris Punjab De' organisation, was arrested in April last year and is currently lodged in Dibrugarh jail under stringent NSA along with his nine associates.
