New Delhi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday reviewed the security situation in caste violence-hit Manipur amid reports of fresh incidents of unrest in the northeastern state.

Sources said that in the high-level meeting, Shah was given detailed information about the current situation in the state by top security officials.

The Home Minister took stock of the situation in Manipur, a day after state Governor Anusuiya Uike met him here. It is believed that Uike informed him about the law and order situation there.

Recently there were reports of fresh violence in the capital Imphal and Jiribam. Sources said the Center is concerned about violence spreading into new areas like Jiribam, which has been largely peaceful in the last one year.

During the meeting, Manipur government representatives said adequate forces have been deployed in areas where fresh violence has been reported.Manipur Government's Security Advisor Kuldeep Singh, DGP Rajeev Singh and Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi attended the meeting on behalf of the state government.

However, Chief Minister N Biren Singh was not present in the meeting.

The hour-long meeting was attended by Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Deka, Army Chief General Manoj Pandey, Army Chief-designate Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi and other senior officers.

Ethnic violence broke out in Manipur on May 3, 2023, following a tribal solidarity march in the hill districts of the state in protest against the demand for Scheduled Tribe status of the majority Meitei community.

More than 220 people from both Kuki and Meitei communities and security personnel have been killed in the ongoing violence since then.

The Meiteis constitute about 53 per cent of Manipur's population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while the tribals, including the Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 per cent and live mainly in the hill districts.Shah's review of the Manipur situation comes a day after he held a similar meeting on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

On June 10, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat expressed concern over the lack of peace in Manipur even after a year and said the situation in the conflict-torn state should be considered on priority.

Addressing a gathering of RSS trainees in Nagpur, he had said, "Manipur has been waiting for peace for the last one year. There was peace in Manipur 10 years ago. It seemed as if the gun culture had ended there. But sudden violence has been witnessed in the state." ".

Bhagwat said the situation in Manipur needs to be considered on priority and there is a need to rise above election rhetoric and focus on the problems facing the country. It is believed that Jammu and Kashmir and Manipur are attracting attention in the third term of the Modi government because both the states have been witnessing unrest for a long time.
