Thermal power generated mainly from coal and gas based plants contributed 127.87 billion units, showing a growth of 14.67 per cent over the same month last year.

Electricity demand reached a record high of 250GW on 30 May, as a prolonged heat wave across northern India kept electricity demand high throughout May and most of June. The maximum demand for electricity is estimated to reach 260GW in 2024-25.

With arrivals ahead of schedule across the country and falling temperatures in the northern states, peak demand is currently around 200GW.

Hydropower generation is expected to increase as the reservoirs refill during monsoon. Electricity generation from large hydropower projects increased by 9.92 percent to 11.62 billion units in May.

Renewable energy projects, excluding hydropower, generated 22.50 billion units, an increase of 18.34 per cent over the year-ago period.

The power ministry has directed domestic coal-based plants to blend 6 per cent of imported coal by September to ensure that enough power is generated to meet the demand.

With India's economic growth rate at 8.2 percent, the highest among major economies, the demand for electricity has also increased due to increase in economic activities.

The government is also considering revisiting power demand projections to plan to create more generation capacity over the next five years.
