Mumbai, US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti has said that the US will send an Indian astronaut to the International Space Station by the end of this year.

Garcetti said on Wednesday that the NISAR project, a joint Earth-observing mission between the US space agency NAS and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), is also likely to launch by the end of the year.

"We are going to send an Indian astronaut to the International Space Station this year," he said.

He said, “When PM (Narendra) Modi came to America (in 2023) we promised that we will do it by the end of this year and our mission is still on track to be able to go to space this year. ,

The US Ambassador was speaking on the sidelines of an event to mark the 248th Independence Day of the United States. He said that both India and the US should focus on coordination of research and emerging technology so that they can rapidly take advantage of each other's strengths.

The diplomat said India landed 'Chandrayaan 3' on the Moon last year at the same cost as the US spent on a similar lunar mission.

“America has some capabilities that India does not have even today. When the two are combined, both countries have those capabilities,” he said.

On the civil nuclear energy sector, Garcetti said that after the election, the Indian government can address outstanding liability issues and move forward "hand in hand".Two sites in India – Mithi Virdhi in Gujarat and Kovada in Andhra Pradesh, have been earmarked to build nuclear reactors for US companies.

However, companies have raised concerns over the Civil Liability Nuclear Damage Act 2010, which provides quick compensation to victims for damages caused by a nuclear incident through a no-fault liability system.
