New Delhi, India Nearly every second person uses the AYUSH health care system, as a government survey found that 46 percent of rural and 53 percent of urban persons use this traditional medicine system.

AYUSH health care system includes Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy.

The first special all-India survey on 'AYUSH' was conducted by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) as part of the 79th round of the National Sample Survey (NSS) from July 2022 to June 2023, an official statement said.

According to the statement, the survey covered the entire country except some inaccessible villages in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Information was collected from 1,81,298 households, which included 1,04,195 households in rural areas and 77,103 households in urban areas.According to the study, about 95 percent of rural and 96 percent of urban respondents know about AYUSH.

About 85 per cent of rural and 86 per cent of urban households have at least one member aware of medicinal plants/home remedies/local health traditions/folk medicine.

Ayurveda is the most commonly used system of treatment in rural and urban areas.

AYUSH is mainly used for rejuvenation and preventive measures.

Additionally, the survey collected information about household expenditure for treatment using AYUSH medical systems.The survey on AYUSH used a stratified multi-stage sampling design in which villages in rural areas and urban frame survey (UFS) blocks or villages or sub-units (SU) of UFS blocks in urban areas were first considered. -Stage Units (FSU).

Last Stage Units (USU) were houses in both areas. Simple random sampling without replacement (SRSWOR) was used to select FSUs as well as households from selected FSUs.

Use of AYUSH system of medicines refers to the use/adoption of one or more systems of Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa and Homeopathy for the treatment/cure of diseases/illnesses or prevention of diseases./Diseases on the advice of doctor/instructor.

This will also include home remedies/self-medication/self-treatment used by any member of the household who is aware of the preventive or beneficial effects of the treatment/medicine.
