BENGALURU: All police officers and staff in Karnataka have been trained on the new criminal laws that came into effect in the country on Monday, the state Director General of Police said.

Alok Mohan said.

The Indian Civil Code (BNS), the Indian Civil Defense Code (BNSS) and the Indian Evidence Act (BSA) take into account some of the current social realities and modern crimes.

The new laws replaced the British-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act respectively.

"All our police officers and staff in all 7 zones, 6 commissionerate units and 1063 police stations... have been given training and the process is underway on the subject," Mohan said in a post on 'X'.

From Monday, all new FIRs will be registered under BNS. However, the cases filed earlier will continue to be heard under the old laws till their final disposal.

It was noted that the new laws have brought in a modern justice system, including provisions like zero FIR, online registration of police complaints, summons through electronic modes like SMS and mandatory videography of crime scenes for all heinous crimes.
