Mumbai: The CD Barfiwala flyover in Andheri was opened for traffic on Thursday evening after it was successfully connected to the Gopal Krishna Gokhale bridge, a civic official said.

The opening of the crucial flyover is expected to ease traffic from Juhu to Andheri East and improve east-west connectivity, a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official said.

BMC had earlier said that the flyover was to open from July 1 after the completion of the parallel alignment with Gokhale bridge.

The civic body had faced criticism from citizens, especially motorists, after the northern section of the Gokhale bridge was inaugurated earlier this year and it was found that it was not aligned with the flyover.

"The flyover was opened for traffic on completion of necessary work of alignment and testing related to vehicle management on Thursday evening. The construction work of the alignment of both the bridges was completed in a record 78 days. Only light vehicles are allowed to ply on it. bridges, while heavy vehicles are prohibited,” the BMC release said.

The work on the South End Carriageway is going on at a fast pace and care will be taken to align and connect it with the CD Barfiwala flyover, the release said.
