Lucknow, Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday raised questions on the maintenance of Taj Mahal in Agra and attacked the Yogi Adityanath government, saying it should not be just a "monument" but a "living and active" example.

Yadav, who shared a viral video in which a plant can be seen growing from the dome of the Taj Mahal, said the roots could cause cracks in the monument.

"The BJP government and its dysfunctional departments have completely failed to maintain the Taj Mahal, the wonder that attracts tourists from all over the world," he said in a post on Twitter.

Yadav further said, "There is a possibility of rusting of the metal of the urn on the main dome. Water is dripping from the main dome. There are reports of plants growing in the dome. If the roots of such trees grow, then the Taj Mahal There may be a crack in it.”

He also highlighted the problems of monkey menace and water logging in the Taj Mahal complex.

"The Taj Mahal complex has become a monkey sanctuary. There is a problem of waterlogging in the Taj Mahal complex. Tourists are worried whether they should enjoy the Taj Mahal or deal with the problems," Yadav said. Because, the image of the country gets tarnished at the global level.

Last week, water leakage was seen in the main dome of the Taj due to incessant rains, but officials said there was no damage to the vaulted ceiling.

Yadav asked where the funds worth crores of rupees coming for the maintenance of Taj Mahal were going.

"The government should not just be a monument but a living and active example," he said.
