Mumbai-owned Air India Tata Group on Monday said it will set up a training institute at Amravati in Maharashtra with an aim to train 180 commercial pilots annually.

The DGCA-licensed Flight Training Organization (FTO) at Belora airport will be the largest such institute in South Asia and will become operational from the first quarter of the next financial year, Air India said in a statement.

According to the airline, the upcoming facility will be the first by any Indian airline in the country and will have 31 single-engine and three twin-engine aircraft for training.

Air India said it has secured the tender from Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) to set up and operate the facility for 30 years.

“The FTO at Amravati will be an important step in making Indian aviation more self-reliant and provide more opportunities to India's youth to fulfill their ambitions of flying as pilots.

"The young pilots who will emerge from this FTO will boost Air India's ambition to become a world-class airline as it progresses on its transformation journey," said Campbell Wilson, Chairman and CEO of Air India.

The facility, to be developed on 10 acres, will have digitally enabled classrooms, hostels on par with global academies, a digitized operations center and a maintenance unit, Air India said.

"The FTO will be operational in Q1 FY26 and will offer aspiring pilots the opportunity to be trained with world-class curricula at par with the best global schools," said Sunil Bhaskaran, Director of the Academy of Air India Aviation.

The collaborative initiative between MADC and Air India will not only boost the economy of Maharashtra by focusing on over 3,000 new employment opportunities within the aviation sector but will also create employment in various allied activities in skill, technical and small business enterprises that will culminate in an impressive contribution. of over Rs 1,000 crore to the state's GDP over the next decade, said Swati Pandey, vice-president and managing director of MADC.
