New Delhi: AIFF assistant general secretary and competitions director Anil Kamat died here on Tuesday after suffering a brief illness, the sport's national governing body announced.

Kamat, a resident of Chinchinim village in Goa, was associated with the All India Football Federation for almost 25 years.

He was associated as an official with CRC Chinchinim and Salcete football clubs. Furthermore, he had also previously served as the Executive Committee Member and Joint Secretary of the Goa Football Association.

Condoling his death, AIFF President Mr. Kalyan Choubey said, "I am truly saddened by the demise of Anil Kamat. With the death of Anil ji, the structure of Indian football has lost a pillar, which will be difficult to compensate. "

"His deep knowledge of football and its management was an asset to Indian football both domestically and internationally. My thoughts are with his family in this hour of grief. Om Shanti."
