The former Tamil Nadu chief minister, who is currently the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Assembly, claimed in a statement on Sunday that students from Adi Dravidian and tribal communities living in hostels run by the welfare department are facing serious difficulties. Is. ,

He said there were media reports that highlighted "unauthorized entry of outsiders and use of liquor on the campus at night". The opposition leader also raised the issue of "shortage of food" for students in these hostels and called on the government to resolve the issue immediately.

The AIADMK leader alleged that attacks on Scheduled Castes (SC) have been on the rise since the DMK government assumed power in May 2021.

Palaniswami said he had highlighted the issues faced by Adi Dravidian and tribal communities, including the presence of feces in overhead drinking water tanks in Pudukkottai district. He also said that he has raised the issue of Scheduled Caste families not getting access to drinking water supply in Tenkasi district.

The Leader of Opposition further said that he had raised the issue of the murder of the SC state president of a national party and the death of SC people due to drinking illicit liquor in Kallakurichi. But, he said, the DMK government is "not keen on resolving the issues faced by the Scheduled Caste and Tribal communities".

Meanwhile, the DMK-led state government claims that it is spending around Rs 1000 crore to improve facilities like roads, street lights and drinking water supply in Adi Dravidian settlements in urban and rural areas.

The state government has allocated Rs 2992.57 crore to the Adi Dravidian and Tribal Welfare Department during 2024-25.
