Chennai: Senior AIADMK leader D Jayakumar on Saturday slammed BJP Tamil Nadu president K Annamalai for her remark that "Jayalalitha was a much better Hindutva leader" and said late party supremo 'Amma' was a leader of people of all religions.

Jayalalithaa's confidant VK Sasikala said Annamalai's comments reflected his 'ignorance' and his 'flawed understanding' of the former chief minister.

Jayakumar, a former minister during the previous AIADMK regime, said Jayalalitha treated people of all religions equally and was a leader of people of all religions.

The AIADMK leader condemned Annamalai, alleging that the BJP leader has done this to add the Hindutva tag to Amma to take political advantage and create her own identity in Tamil Nadu and it is an indecent act to defame her.

When the Babri Masjid was demolished in 1992, Jayalalitha as Chief Minister ensured peace and implemented several schemes for the welfare of minorities, such as free rice to mosques during the fasting month of Ramzan and financial assistance to Christians. To provide so that they can get help in moving forward.Jayakumar said in a statement, I am on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

"She was determined to respect the religious beliefs of people of all religions and to be uncompromising in protecting them all." Amma's legacy of being a unique leader of people of all religions will remain a part of Tamil Nadu's history, Jayakumar said.

Sasikala said Jayalalitha crossed the barriers of caste and religion and was a great leader who was respected by all sections of the society. She was the only leader whom everyone considered as their own, be they Hindu, Muslim or Christian and such a big leader cannot be brought under a specific narrow tag, he said in a post on 'X'.On 23 May, in an interview, Annamalai had said, "...as long as Jayalalitha was alive, she was a far better Hindutva leader than any other in Tamil Nadu before 2014, when you had a party like BJP and Jayalalitha. She was a great leader." The natural choice for Hindu voters would be Jayalalitha, who has openly displayed her Hindu identity.

Annamalai had said that the BJP was filling the void in Tamil Nadu politics after the death of AIADM supremo and former Chief Minister Jayalalitha.
