New Delhi, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Friday stressed the need to ensure timely availability of fertilizers, seeds and pesticides for the upcoming Kharif crop season starting in July and to avoid any supply disruption for farmers. Emphasis on constant monitoring.

Reviewing preparations for the Kharif (summer) season, which also includes sowing of crops like paddy with the onset of south-west monsoon rains, Chouhan directed officials to ensure quality input supply and timely availability of inputs, an official statement said. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the south-west monsoon to be above normal this year, which is a positive sign for the agriculture sector.

Chouhan also stressed the need to increase agricultural mechanization and adopt technology to increase productivity.

He called for linking agricultural education with agricultural practices to better utilize the skills of people with higher education in agricultural sciences.

The Minister urged for in-depth discussions to improve the utility of Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), which are agricultural science centers aimed at providing agricultural extension services.

Simplifying natural farming practices to encourage more farmers to adopt them was another area of ​​focus, according to the statement.

Officials from various departments including fertiliser, water resources and meteorology briefed the minister about the preparations for the Kharif season.

Separately, reviewing the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Chouhan stressed the need for scientists to continuously work on developing new crop varieties, improving productivity and validating new technologies.
