Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala government on Tuesday announced that with the commencement of operations at Vizhinjam International Port, shipping services to other ports in the state will also be started.

Ports Minister VN Vasavan said the commencement of operations at Vizhinjam is expected to strengthen coastal shipping of goods in the southern state.

The Kerala Maritime Board has started discussions with private shipping companies to promote coastal shipping of goods, he said.

He told the state assembly that at present, services can be started to Kollam, Beypore and Azhikode ports which have the infrastructure facilities.

Responding to a question, the Minister said efforts to improve infrastructure in such ports have already started.

Vasavan said the board has taken several measures in this regard, including obtaining necessary permission from the central government, increasing the depth of ports and construction of additional wharves.

Last week, port officials said Vizhinjam International Port has received its location code, an important milestone towards the start of its operations as a major transshipment hub.

In a Facebook post, Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL) had said that the port received its location code – IN NYY 1 – from the Government of India on June 21, 2024.
