Patna, In the wake of the recent deaths of three civil service aspirants at a Delhi coaching institute, the Patna district administration has raised urgent concerns over overcrowding at local coaching centers and has set a one-month deadline so that they comply with regulatory standards.

District Magistrate Chandrashekhar Singh on Wednesday said inspections revealed that most of the coaching centers in the city are overcrowded and located in congested areas.

However, he refuted media reports suggesting that some institutes, including the prominent Khan Sir training centre, had been sealed or issued notices.

The district administration has directed coaching center owners to ensure that each student is allotted a minimum of one square meter of space during classes or batches. In addition, there must be adequate infrastructure in proportion to the number of students enrolled.

"The ongoing inspection of coaching institutes by the district officials has revealed that most of them are overcrowded and functioning in crowded areas. This issue was discussed with members of the coaching center owners' association in Patna. They were asked to ensure allocation of a minimum of one square meter for each student during a class/batch, the SM said.

The administration has ordered training centers to comply with building bylaws, fire safety regulations and other standards, including having adequate entry and exit points in each classroom. The owners have been directed to obtain mandatory registration to operate coaching centers within a month. Failure to comply with these provisions will result in strict measures.

"Members of the association have been asked to ensure that the building in which the training centers operate strictly complies with the building bylaws. In addition, the building must comply with fire safety guidelines and other regulations, including one entry and one exit point in each classroom. Strict action will be taken against those centers that do not comply with the existing provisions after a month," the DM said.

The district administration has also proposed the development of a coach-only city or town with modern facilities on the outskirts of Patna. This proposal will be processed before the competent authorities. Some training center owners have applied to be granted industry status; However, Singh clarified that such decisions are the responsibility of government policy makers.

Addressing rumors about closure of Khan Sir coaching institutes, Singh stated that no orders had been issued to this effect. A branch of Khan Sir Institute on Boring Road in Patna was reported to be closed on Wednesday, but Singh stressed that this was not due to any administrative directive. Khan Sir could not be reached for comment.

Earlier in the day, Additional Chief Secretary (Education) S. Siddharth directed district magistrates across the state to ensure that coaching centers comply with existing regulations and provide facilities that meet the prescribed standards.

Three civil services aspirants died after the basement of a building housing a coaching center was flooded following heavy rains in central Delhi's Old Rajinder Nagar area on July 27.
