This plan was first opposed by environmental activists and soon the opposition Congress also adopted it.

Veteran Congress MLA and former Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala criticized the decision to plant eucalyptus saplings on forest land owned by the Kerala Forest Development Corporation, calling it "strange".

“It is against all the laws of the state and center because this species of tree has a negative impact on the water level, moreover it is an invasive species and can destroy precious forest trees. If this happens, I mean increase “Maybe in man-animal conflict, wild animals will start entering human habitation areas,” he said.

Chennithala also called it strange that the Kerala Forest Department had first received funds from the United Nations to remove eucalyptus and acacia trees and then instructions came to plant the same species.
