Kolkata, Venkatesh Iyer played an inning of 42 runs in 21 balls in the IPL here on Saturday, after which Mumba Indians' disciplined bowling unit restricted Kolkata Knight Riders to 157 runs for seven wickets.

Battling a muscle strain, Iyer lifted KKR after their worst start of the season with his counter-attacking innings after MI won a good toss after a late start due to rain.

The highlight of the left-handed batsman's innings was the way he hit Jasprit Bumrah for a six and two fours.

Nitish Rana, who missed 11 matches due to a finger injury, scored 33 runs from 23 balls in a crucial partnership with Iyer before being run out.

But Mumbai made a good comeback with leg spinner Piyush Chawla taking 2 for 38 in his three overs, along with two important wickets of Iyer and Andre Russell (24 off 1 ball; 2x4, 2x6).Russell looked in good spirits and his wicket during the game deprived KKR of some extra runs.

Bumrah (2 for 39 in four overs) ended his brilliant spell by dismissing Rinku Singh for 20 runs in 12 balls.

On a sticky wicket that remained under cover for three days due to incessant rain in the city, KKR made their worst start of the season and lost their openers - Phil Salt (6) and Sunil Narine (0) within the space of seven balls.

After being hit for a six on the first ball, Nuwan Thushara dismissed Salt with a slower one and Bumrah troubled Narine with a ball that spun away and clipped his off stump.

Bumrah seemed unable to play and he troubled the batsmen by dismissing Narine on the very first ball of the test match.Captain Shreyas Iyer also looked confused and after scoring seven runs in 10 balls, he was bowled on the leg ball by Anshul Kamboj.

Iyer had to face a lot of problems after his heel was injured by a square leg throw.

After some treatment, the left-hander batted carelessly and attacked MI's best bowler when he hit him for a six and also a four in the 15-run over.

His innings ensured that KKR kept their run-rate high, and they were 45/3 in the power play, which was reduced to five overs due to rain.

Chawla dismissed him on the very first ball, but then Russell maintained the rhythm. He welcomed Chawla by raising loud slogans at the Cow Corner and also showed his graceful side by hitting a brilliant four.
