Last month, Zameer paid an official visit to New Delhi and discussed bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest with India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

"This visit was long overdue. Usually, when a new Cabinet is appointed in Maldives, they make their first visit to Sri Lanka. But this time it could not happen as their counterparts in Sri Lanka were not available," One said. Sources close to the Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka.

The visit of the Maldivian Foreign Minister to Colombo will be closely watched by observers as Muizzu has promised to end the 'India First' policy of the Indian Ocean archipelago.

Interestingly, more Indian tourists visit Sri Lanka due to the strained relations between the two countries.

The number of Indian tourists arriving in Sri Lanka has increased sharply from 13,759 in January 2023 to 34,000 in January 2024, Sri Lanka's Tourism Minister has admitted that there was a sharp decline in the tourism market of Maldives in 2024.

Tourism Minister Harin Fernando has also said Sri Lanka has a lot to offer Indian tourists - including beaches, shopping and the Ramayana Trail that historically links the two South Asian neighbours.

During his visit, Zamir is scheduled to pay courtesy calls on President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardene in addition to official bilateral talks with Foreign Minister Ali Sabri.

The ministers representing the two island nations in South Asia are expected to explore ways to further strengthen the long-standing bilateral ties and also discuss providing convenient facilities to Maldivians living in Sri Lanka.
