Imphal, Manipur: Incessant rains in Imphal West and Imphal East districts have caused flooding at many places due to breach of embankments of two major rivers. Officials gave this information on Wednesday.

He said that in view of the flood situation, the state government has declared a holiday in all government offices on Wednesday, while schools will remain closed till Thursday.

The Imphal river has breached its embankment at Singjamei Oinam Thingel in Imphal West and the Kongba river has breached its embankment at parts of Kongba Irong and Keirao in Imphal East, a senior official said.

The Iril river is also in spate in Savombung and parts of Ksheteigao in Imphal East.

"Large amounts of river water has entered residential areas... More than 3 kilometers of the India-Myanmar road has also been flooded and more than 1,000 people have been affected," he said.

He said that relief and rescue work is going on for the affected people.

Meanwhile, the body of a 25-year-old man who fell into the Senapati river on Tuesday afternoon was fished out by a team of the Indian Red Cross Society with the help of local people, officials said.

Many parts of the northeastern state have received heavy rain in the last few days.
