Mumbai After Delhi, CNG price in Mumbai increased by Rs 1.50 per kg and the rate of cooking gas transported to homes by Re 1 due to increase in input costs.
Mahanagar Gas Ltd, which sells CNG to automobiles and piped natural gas to homes for cooking in Mumbai and surrounding cities, said the price hike will come into effect from the intervening night of July 8-9.
"To meet the growing volume of the domestic CNG and piped natural gas (PNG) segments and due to a higher shortfall in domestic gas allocation, MGL is sourcing additional natural gas at market price (imported LNG), which has resulting in higher gas costs," the firm said. he said in a statement.
To "partially offset the increase in gas cost", MGL has increased the delivered price of CNG by Rs 1.50 per kg and domestic PNG by Re 1 per standard cubic meter in and around Mumbai.
Accordingly, the revised delivered prices including all taxes on CNG will be Rs 75 per kg and the PNG domestic price will be Rs 48 per square meter in and around Mumbai.
On June 22, Indraprastha Gas Ltd, the urban gas license holder for the national capital and adjoining cities, increased the price of CNG by Re 1 per kg to Rs 75.09 in Delhi. However, it had not touched PNG rates, which are still priced at Rs 48.59 per square metre.
"Even after the above revision, MGL's CNG offers attractive savings of around 50 per cent and 17 per cent compared to petrol and diesel, respectively, at current price levels in Mumbai, while PNG national MGL continues to provide convenience, safety, reliability and environmental friendliness for consumers," the company stated. “Even after the small increase, the price of CNG and domestic MGL PNG is among the lowest in the country.”
Natural gas extracted from the land and seabed is converted into CNG to power cars and piped to homes for cooking. But supplies from the state-run Oil and Natural Gas Corporation's (ONGC) domestic fields have not kept pace with demand.
Gas from ONGC fields accounts for 66-67 per cent of CNG demand and the rest has to be imported.
