Bhopal: After the BJP's victory in the Chhindwara Lok Sabha seat, which is the home turf of veteran Congress leader Kamal Nath, the saffron party is now all set to capture the Amarwada assembly constituency, the by-election for which will be held on July 10.

Notably, in the recently held general elections, the BJP candidate from Chhindwara Lok Sabha constituency gained a lead of more than 15,000 votes over the Amarwara seat.

BJP has won all the 29 Lok Sabha seats in Madhya Pradesh.

Historically, since 1972, the BJP has won the Amarwada (ST) seat twice (in 1990 and 2008), while the Congress has won it nine times. The Gondwana Gantantra Party (GGP), a tribal organisation, had secured this constituency once in 2003.

The Amarwada assembly seat was won by Kamlesh Shah on Congress ticket in the November 2023 elections when he defeated BJP candidate Monica Manmohan Shah Batti by a margin of 25,086 votes.The by-election was necessitated after three-time Congress MLA Kamlesh Shah from Amarwada resigned on March 29 this year and joined the ruling BJP soon after. After this Shah resigned from the state assembly.

The schedule of by-elections was announced by the Election Commission on Monday. Counting of votes will take place on July 13.

In the recent Lok Sabha elections, BJP candidate Bunty Vivek Sahu defeated former Chhindwara MP and Congress candidate Nakul Nath by a margin of 1.13 lakh votes.

According to Election Commission data, BJP got 93,512 votes while Congress got 78,473 votes at polling stations under Amarwada assembly seat during the general elections, giving BJP a lead of more than 15,000 votes on this seat.

Political observers suggest that Kamlesh Shah, who is now in the BJP, is likely to be fielded by the saffron party from the Amarwada seat.Election notification will be issued on June 14, the last date for filing nomination papers is June 21.

Scrutiny of ballot papers will be done on June 24 and the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers is June 26.
