Hyderabad: In another blow to BRS, the opposition party has lost around 15 posts of municipal president and about half a dozen posts of municipal vice president due to resignations since the no-confidence motion was moved against the ruling Congress and the arrival of the national party. Official sources said on Tuesday that he came to power six months ago.

The number of no-confidence motions is being considered unprecedented and Congress getting the post of heads of urban local bodies is expected to strengthen the party in urban areas.

The BRS (erstwhile TRS) won 107 out of 120 municipalities in the municipal elections held in the state in 2020.

The BRS suffered a major blow in the state capital when Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Mayor Vijaya Lakshmi R Gadwal and her deputy Moth Srilatha Shoban Reddy left the BRS and joined the Congress about two months ago.

Vijaya Lakshmi R Garhwal had joined Congress in March this year. His father Keshav Rao, who was a BRS Rajya Sabha member and party general secretary, also returned to the Congress.

Official sources said BRS chairmen in about 15 municipalities have been voted out following a no-confidence motion brought against them.

The spate of no-confidence motions began in February this year with the election of Congress's Burr Srinivas Reddy as Nalgonda Municipality Chairman.

Congress also secured the posts of vice presidents in several municipalities following the no-confidence motion against sitting BRS leaders.

However, BRS managed to retain the positions of president and vice president in some municipalities after winning the confidence vote.

At present the number of municipalities is 129, while there are 13 municipal corporations including GHMC.

Municipal corporation elections are to be held in January 2025.
