Kochi, Actor Prithviraj Sukumaran and his wife Supriya Menon have acquired a majority stake in Kochi FC, a team that will compete in the upcoming Super League Kerala (SLK) football championship.

Season one of the 60-day SLK will begin from the end of August this year and features six franchises including Kochi FC.

Six teams from Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Kannur and Malappuram will compete in the championship, SLK said in a statement.

SLK said Prithviraj expressed hope that the inaugural season of the league will give a huge boost to football activities at the professional and grassroots level in football-enthusiastic Kerala.

He stressed that this will create many opportunities for deserving and emerging players, the release said.

Super League Kerala CEO Mathew Joseph highlighted that actor Prithviraj's participation in the league will inspire and excite a large number of youngsters.

"The event marks a unique blend of entertainment and sports during the 60-day Khel Mahakumbh starting from the end of August this year in Kerala," Joseph said.

Reacting to the development, Menon expressed his strong support for a major sporting event to be held in Kerala.

She said her partnership with others is aimed at inspiring more female sports fans to attend live matches in stadiums, the release said.

KFA President Nawas Miran said such investments are a boost to the football and sports economy of our state.

The co-owners of the Kochi FC team are Nasli Mohammed, Praveesh Kuzhipalli, Shamim Baikar and Mohammed Shayjal.
