JAMMU: The Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday registered a case against officials of the motor vehicles department at the regional transport office (RTO) here for alleged embezzlement of passenger tax worth lakhs of rupees from 2018 to 2023.

The ACB said in a statement here that based on the outcome of preliminary verification, a case was registered against the then junior assistant Manju Sharma and others under relevant sections of the law, including the Prevention of Corruption Act.

It said the verification was conducted by the ACB to look into allegations of irregularities with respect to collection or deposit of passenger tax as well as possible misuse in access to collection of the same through online mode since 2018. From General Administration Department on 6 March 2023.

The statement said that verification revealed that Sharma was deputed to the Accounts Section of RTO, Jammu to collect passenger tax from the owners of passenger commercial vehicles during the relevant period.

“While collecting passenger tax dues, he acted dishonestly and resorted to haphazardly concealing the actual amount of passenger tax collected from vehicle owners or operators by showing only a small part of the amount in the official records.

"The sole amount of passenger tax shown in the counterfoil of the Government Receipts (GR) was deposited in the government treasury, while the remaining amount collected from the vehicle owners/operators was misused by him," the ACB said.

Further, it said that manual cash book, day book and vehicle-wise details relating to collection and deposit of passenger tax dues have allegedly not been maintained properly during this period. 6/2/2024 MNK
