Dhaniakhali (WB), TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Friday challenged the BJP to a public debate to compare their respective records of development governance.

Addressing an election rally at Dhaniakhali in West Bengal's Hooghly district, Banerjee challenged outgoing BJP MP and candidate Locket Chatterjee to confront her with their respective report cards on actual development work in the constituency. TMC's Hooghly candidate Rachna Banerjee was also with him.

"BJP claims it has achieved a lot. Let them bring a white paper," Banerjee said.Challenge him (Locket Chatterjee) to come before me with the report card of our work. We will win comfortably."

In the tense political environment, Banerjee also expressed confidence in the victory of the INDI block, in which TMC will play a key role.

He criticized the tax policies of the central government, highlighting the disproportionate GST rates on essential goods compared to luxury goods.

Terming the BJP as pro-rich, he remarked, “BJP levies 18 per cent GST on the key spice cumin, while diamonds, a symbol of wealth, are barely taxed.,

He condemned the high inflation rate during the BJP tenure, affecting essential commodities like milk, LPG gas, kerosene and pulses.

Criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Banerjee described him as an 'outsider' who is visible only during elections and questioned his absence during the COVID pandemic in the state. He accused Modi of exploiting the Pulwama terror attack for electoral gains in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Banerjee cautioned that the BJP's agenda goes beyond mere electoral goals and accused efforts to dictate personal choices, including diet and sartorial preferences.

Focusing on the local economy, Banerjee highlighted that the BJ government has reduced the procurement of jute bags from Hooghly mills, putting livelihoods dependent on the industry at risk. She defended the Lakshmi Bhandar Scheme, a financial assistance program for women, and accused the BJP of trying to stop it.

Addressing the controversial Sandeshkhali incident, Banerjee accused the BJP of hatching a conspiracy to tarnish the reputation of Bengal. He compared this to the alleged high rate of attacks on tribals in BJP-led states.

Voting is to be held in Hooghly district on May 20 under the fifth phase.
