Bhubaneswar, Abha Khatua created a national record in women's shot put with a bye throw of 18.41 meters on the second day of the National Federation Cup athletic competition here on Monday.

Abha, who is representing Maharashtra, was the joint record holder of 18.06 with Manpreet Kaur before this competition. But with her fifth round throw of 18.41m at the Kalinga Stadium, she became the sole national record holder.

However her effort was well short of the Olympic qualifying mark of 18.80 metres, which no Indian woman has ever reached. The qualifying window is from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024.Uttar Pradesh's Kiran Baliyan (16.54 metres) and Delhi's Srishti Wig (15.86 metres) stood second and third respectively.

In the men's 200m final, Odisha's Animesh Kujur clocked an impressive 20.62 seconds, one-tenth of a second off the two-year-old national record of 20.52 seconds held by Amlan Borgohain.

Coming from a poor family, 28-year-old Abha started athletics when she was studying in 7th class.

Born to a farmer father in Khurshi village near Narayangarh town in West Midnapore district of West Bengal, Khatua competed in several athletics events before taking up shot put four years ago.

Initially, he participated in 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres, long jump and javelin throw.She also competed in heptathlon in 2017–18, but since she was not good in high jump (one of the seven events in heptathlon), she shifted to shot put in late 2018 and attended the national camp in Patiala in 2019. However, 2021 proved to be a difficult time in her life as she was suffering from COVID-19, Chikungunya and high uric acid and also had an injury to her right elbow which affected her career as she could not perform well in the Nation Inter . State. He also missed the Asian Games after throwing 16.39 meters to finish third in the National Inter-State Championships in Bhubaneswar, which was the final selection event.

Abha later won a silver medal at the Asian Championships in Thailand in July with a throw of 18.06m to equal Manpreet Kaur's national record and then won the shot put event at the Indian Grand Prix 5 with an effort of 18.02m.
