In New Delhi, state-run oil companies are carrying out Aadhaar-based eKYC authentication of LPG customers to weed out fake ones, Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said.

This is done to eliminate fake customers in whose names cooking gas is reserved, but which is used by commercial establishments.

While households purchase what is called domestic LPG for Rs 803 per 14.2 kg cylinder (around Rs 56.5 per kg), commercial establishments such as hotels and restaurants are required to purchase a 19 kg commercial cylinder which It costs Rs 1,646 (Rs 86.3 per kg). ).

"Oil marketing companies are carrying out eKYC aadhaar authentication for LPG customers to weed out fake customers under whose name certain gas distributors often book commercial cylinders," Puri said in a post on X. "This process has been in effect for more than 8 months."

His post came in response to VD Satheesan, leader of the opposition in the Kerala Assembly, raising the "unprecedented hardship" caused to the common man due to the decision.

"It is learned that the central government has ordered the meeting for gas connections to ensure that LPG cylinders are in the hands of legitimate customers. Although the meeting is imperative to identify the legitimate customers, the decision to complete the meeting process at the respective gas agencies has caused inconvenience to common LPG holders," he said in a letter to Puri, a copy of which was published in X.

In response, Puri said that the LPG delivery staff, while delivering refills to the customer, check the credentials.

"The delivery staff using their mobile phone captures the customer's Aadhaar credentials through an app. The customer receives an OTP which is used to complete the process. Customers can also approach the dealer's showroom whenever they suits."

Alternatively, customers can also install oil company apps and complete the eKYC on their own.

"There is no deadline for this activity either on the part of the oil marketing companies or the Central Government. It is also clarified by the OMC that there are no 'meetings' of clients in the showrooms of the LPG distributors," he stated. .

Besides, oil companies are also issuing a clarification to press this matter to give assurance to customers and ensure that there is no difficulty or inconvenience to any genuine consumer, he added.

India has 32.64 crore active domestic LPG users, according to data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell of the Ministry of Petroleum.
