On an average, 50 to 60 dead bodies used to reach Nigambodh Ghat every day, but in the last two days this number has more than doubled.
According to the Nigambodh Ghat administration, 90 bodies were brought to the crematorium on June 18, while the number increased to 142 on June 19.
Nigambodh Ghat in-charge Suman Gupta told IANS that during the Covid period, 1,500 bodies were brought to the cremation ground in the month of June, however this time around 1,100 bodies have been cremated at the ghat between June 1-19.
During the Covid period, a maximum of 253 bodies were brought to Nigambodh Ghat in a day.
According to Gupta, the number of dead bodies brought also increases during severe winter.
