Bridgetown [Barbados] former West Indies opener and captain Chris Gayle is not willing to 'rule out' 'special' player Virat Kohli despite his poor form in the T20 World Cup.

Kohli has been chasing shadows of the player he used to be for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the 2024 Indian Premier League.

Since he landed in the US and West Indies for the main event, Kohli has been seeking runs with the bat from him throughout the ongoing edition of the main event.

Despite his nightmare run in the T20 World Cup, Indian captain Rohit Sharma, along with former players, backed Kohli to bounce back in the final against South Africa.

Gayle, who played alongside Kohli for RCB, backed the stalwart batsman to bounce back and create a show in the game that matters most, the T20 World Cup final against South Africa.

"These things happen to superstars or world-class players like Virat. We know how dominant he has been in previous World Cups. A bat, it can happen to anyone. But the good thing about it. It's in the final and sometimes you can call up big players and step up and win the real match for the team so you can't rule out a player like Virat Kohli without a doubt We know how special he is so we just have to wait. and we'll see what he offers tomorrow," Gayle said during a press conference.

Kohli finished IPL 2024 with Orange Cap amassing a whopping 741 runs at an average of 61.75 and a strike rate of 154.69, with one century and five half-centuries.

But in the ongoing T20 World Cup, he has been chasing shadows of his former self. Kohli's record is in complete contrast to his IPL figures.

In seven matches, Kohli, for all his experience, has struggled to put together a series of performances opening alongside Rohit. He has managed only 75 runs at an average of 10.71 throughout the tournament.

India will play the final on Saturday against South Africa at the Kensington Oval. If rain does not allow the game to take place, then there will be a reserve day.
