An under-construction small bridge collapsed in Motihari, East Champaran district on Sunday, the third such incident in Bihar in less than a week. The officers provided this information.

He told that there is no news of any casualty in this incident which took place in Ghorasahan block of Motihari.

A 16-metre long bridge was being built on the canal by the state Rural Works Department (RWD) to connect Amwa village to other areas of the block. He told that it is being built at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore.

RWD Additional Chief Secretary Deepak Kumar Singh said, "The exact cause of the incident is not yet known. This is a serious matter and a departmental inquiry has been ordered. Strict action will be taken against those found guilty."

"Senior officials of the district administration have reached the spot. A detailed report is awaited," he said.

District Magistrate Saurabh Jorwal said that the exact cause of the incident is being ascertained.

"There are reports that a section of the local people had initially objected to the construction of some pillars of the bridge. The police are also investigating the matter," he said.

A small bridge collapsed in Siwan district on Saturday. It was built over a canal connecting villages of Daraunda and Maharajganj blocks.

Earlier on Tuesday, a newly constructed bridge about 180 meters long had collapsed in Araria district.

The state has been witness to several accidents involving small and big bridges built over rivers and other water bodies. Although there have been no casualties in such incidents, it has raised questions about the quality of public works.
