Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh Roads and Buildings (R&B) Minister B C Janardhan Reddy on Wednesday said over 9,000 km of roads in the state are in a deplorable condition, and promised to repair them on a war footing.

The minister shared information about the condition of roads in the state after taking charge at the secretariat.

Speaking to reporters, Reddy said, "My immediate aim is to repair all the affected roadways on a war footing and make them pothole free." He said it is proposed to repair 8,161 km of district roads and 3,340 km of state highways.

He said that proposals worth Rs 284 crore have already been received.

According to the minister, the YSRCP government budgeted Rs 19,428 crore for the R&B department between 2019 and 2024, but spent only 46 per cent of that amount or Rs 9,015 crore.

Alleging that bills amounting to Rs 2,261 crore were not paid to contractors, he said this has made contractors apathetic and reluctant to work.

According to Reddy, the state has a road network of 8,164 km of national highways, 12,653 km of state highways, 27,062 km of main district roads and 5,663 km of rural roads, making a total of 53,542 km of roads.

He said that out of 53,542 km, roads of length 45,378 km come under the purview of the state government.

Janardhan Reddy alleged that the YSRCP government had failed to allocate adequate funds for roads in the last five years, requiring special repair of 22,007 km of roads.
