Kolkata: An estimated 86.31 per cent of the over 9.12 lakh students who appeared for the West Bengal Class 10 state board examination this year have passed the exam, an education official said on Thursday.

Among the students who passed the exam, 4,03,900 were male and 5,08,69 were female, which is 25 percent more than boys.

Ramanuj Ganguly, chairman of the West Bengal Secondary Examination Board, said last year the pass percentage was 86.15 percent.

Chandrachud Sen, a student of Rambhola High School in Cooch Behar district, secured the first rank by scoring 693 marks (99 percent). Samaypriyao Guru O Purulia Zilla School stood second with 692 marks (98.86 percent).The third position was taken by three people – Udayan Prasad of Balurghat High School, Pushpita Basuri of New Integrated Government School (Ilambazar) and Nayrit Ranjan Pal of Narendrapur Ramakrishna Mission – who scored 691 marks (98.71 per cent).

Students from Cooch Behar, Purulia, Dakshin Dinajpur, Birbhum, South and North 24 Parganas, Hooghly, East Bardhaman, Malda and West Medinipur were among the top 10.

Among the districts, Kalimpong has the highest pass percentage at 96.26, followed by East Medinipur (95.49) and Kolkata (91.62).

Among Kolkata candidates, Somdutta Samanta of Kamala Girls School broke into the top 10 by scoring 684 marks (97.71 per cent).

Samant was among the 18 candidates who scored the same marks and secured the 10th rank.West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee congratulated the successful candidates.

"My best wishes and congratulations to all the students who have passed the secondary examination. My congratulations to your parents and teachers. May you have blessed days ahead, I pray," she said on Twitter.

Ganguly said, "The consistent trend over the years of students from other districts in Kolkata outperforming their peers in the Class 10 board exams shows that the educational scope and infrastructure is not limited to the metropolis only and is not limited to small towns. It is equally available in India also.,

Topper Chandrachud Sen's father Sushant Sen said that his son wants to study medicine.

He said, “He does not follow any typical study schedule of 10-12 hours… He studies whenever he wants. He likes to participate in debates and is good at giving impromptu speeches."
