Kannur (Kerala): At least eight students of a nursing college were admitted to hospital on Saturday after gas leaked from a tanker lorry at Ramapuram in this district.

The college students started feeling uneasy and having difficulty breathing and were taken to Pariyaram Medical College and Pazhayangady Taluk Hospital.

Police said his condition is stable.

Hydrochloric acid leaked from the tanker lorry on Friday evening when it was on its way to Ernakulam from neighboring Karnataka.

Although a fire brigade team from Payyannur and Pariyam police reached the area and initiated further action, the leakage could not be completely controlled, officials said.

A leak was detected in the valve at the rear of the container and the vehicle was soon shifted to a safe location by the fire force.

Thaliparamba Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) Ajaykumar said steps were being taken to transfer the gas to another tanker.
