A total of 78.71 percent voting took place in the by-election held on Wednesday in Amarwada (ST) seat of Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh. An officer gave this information.

Voting decreased by 10 percent compared to the 2023 assembly elections.

The by-election to this Scheduled Tribe-reserved seat in Chhindwara district was prestigious for both the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress as till recently Chhindwara was considered the stronghold of senior Congress leader Kamal Nath.

In the 2023 assembly elections, Congress won the Amarwara seat, but this time BJP's Vivek Bunty Sahu won the Chhindwara Lok Sabha seat by defeating Nath's son Nakul Nath.

The assembly by-election had become necessary after three-time Congress MLA Kamlesh Shah joined the BJP on March 29 this year.

A total of nine candidates were in the fray, but the main contest was between BJP's Kamlesh Shah, Congress's Dheeran Shah Inwati and Gondwana Gantantra Party (GGP)'s Devaraman Bhalawi.

Returning officer Shilendra Singh told reporters that the voting was 78.71 percent.

He said that 80 percent male and 77.40 percent female voters exercised their franchise.

There was 88.63 percent voting in Amarwada in the 2023 elections.

Counting of votes will take place on July 13.

GGP had won the Amarwada seat once in 2003. The Congress had won the seat nine times, while the BJP had emerged victorious from Amarwada in 1972, 1990 and 2008.
