The USGS said the earthquake occurred 8.8 kilometers away from the Atikipa district.

Initially, a warning of "possible" tsunami waves reaching 1 to 3 meters was issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTC) in some coastal areas of Peru, but the warning was later lifted, CNN reports.

He said that there is no longer any danger of tsunami from this earthquake.

In a post on Twitter, the Peruvian Presidency posted that the government is monitoring the situation and evaluating any potential damage.
