Patna: Voting in five constituencies of Bihar in the third phase of Lok Sabha elections was conducted peacefully, with a provisional turnout of 60 per cent, which is about one per cent less than the 2019 general elections.

He said that two people deployed on election duty in Araria and Supaul Lok Sabha seats died of heart attack.

Voting also took place in Jhanjharpur, Madhepura and Khagaria assembly constituencies.

Officials said voting was largely peaceful, except for an incident of damage to an EV following a minor clash between two groups of supporters inside a polling booth in Khagaria.

In the 2019 general elections, the voting percentage in these five Lok Sabha seats was 61.22 percent.Araria recorded 62.80 percent voting, followed by Supaul (62.40), Madhepura (61), Khagaria (58.20) and Jhanjharpur (55.50).

Chief Electoral Officer H R Srinivas said, "Polling began at 7 am amid tight security. After the voting deadline ended at 6 pm, around 60 per cent voting was recorded. But this figure is provisional."

Voting percentage will increase, he said, adding that voters were in queue at some booths at 6 pm.The CEO said voters boycotted voting at nine booths out of total 9,84 polling stations due to some local issues.

“An EVM was damaged after a minor clash between two groups of supporters inside a polling booth in Khagaria Lok Sabha seat. He said Election Commission observers will analyze the incident tomorrow to decide further action.

Regarding the death of two people, he said that a home guard Mahendra Shah and an officer Shailendra Kumar from Araria and Supaul seats respectively died due to heart failure.

“After post-mortem examination, their bodies were handed over to the family members,” the CEO said.

Speaking to reporters, Additional Director General (ADG) of Biha Police (HQ) JS Gangwar said, around 40,000 security personnel and 19,666 home guards were deployed across the five Lok Sabha seats to ensure smooth polling on Tuesday.Security forces also recovered Rs 80 lakh in cash and 1.40 lakh liters of liquor (worth Rs 3.75 crore) from various places in these five Lok Sabha seats on Tuesday.

There is a ban on sale and consumption of liquor in Bihar since April 2016.
