Ludhiana: Six villages in Ludhiana on Saturday boycotted the Lok Sabha elections in protest against the biogas plant being built there and expressed apprehension that it would pollute underground water, air and cause health problems.

The villages whose residents boycotted voting during the seventh phase of elections on Saturday are: Bhundri, Ghazipur, Ghungrali Rajputan, Kishangarh, Nawan Pind and Mushkadabad.

Bharati Kisan Union (Ekta Dakaunda) leaders Jagtar Singh and Inderjit Singh Dhulewal, who are leading the movement, said that residents of these villages have been on strike against the plant for the last 32 days.

They have expressed apprehension that the establishment of this biogas plant will create health problems for them. According to him, this will pollute underground water and pollute the air.

He said that they will continue their agitation until the construction of the factory is stopped.

Voting took place on Saturday for 13 Lok Sabha seats of Punjab.
