Thane, At least six workers were injured in a massive fire following a boiler explosion at a chemical factory in Dombivali in Maharashtra's Thane district on Thursday. An officer gave this information.

The official said that the explosion took place in the boiler of Amber Chemical Company located in Phase 2 of Dombivali MIDC area.

An eyewitness said that the explosion was so powerful that its sound was heard up to a kilometer away. He said glass windows of a nearby building were shattered, while several nearby houses were damaged due to the blast.

A civic official said the injured workers were taken to a local hospital.

Thane civic body disaster management cell chief Yasin Tadvi said the blast occurred at the chemical factory at around 13.40 pm.

He said the fire caused by the explosion spread to three nearby factories and the thick plume of smoke and flames could be seen from a great distance.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavi described the incident as tragic and said that eight people trapped in the complex have been rescued.

“Arrangements have been made for treatment of the injured and more ambulances have been kept ready. I have discussed with Thane Collector and he is also reaching the spot...Teams of NDRF, TDRF and fire brigade have been called.

He said, "I pray to God for the speedy recovery of the injured."

A brigade call was given following which eight fire tenders were sent to the spot, Tadvi said.

Teams from the Thane civic body's Regional Disaster Management Cell and 13 Thane Disaster Response Force personnel have also reached the spot and efforts are underway to control the fire, the official said.
