The earthquake occurred at 5.36 pm. local time (0836 GMT) that hit parts of the prefecture at a depth of 540 km, measuring 3 on the Japanese intensity scale 7, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
According to Xinhua news agency, the epicenter of the earthquake was located at 27.9 degrees north latitude and 140.0 degrees east longitude on the west coast of the islands, about 875 km south of Tokyo.
Light tremors were also felt in central Tokyo. No tsunami warning has been issued.
