Mangaluru (Karnataka), The 5th Surfing Indian Open highlighting the talent and skills of India's top surfers will begin here from May 3.

Notable participants include Ramesh Budihal, Kishore Kumar, Harish M Srikanth D, Manikandan D, Kamali Murthy, Srishti Selvam and Sandhya Arun. These surfers will compete for top honors in four different categories: Men's Open, Women's Open and Grommes U-16 Boys and Girls.

The three-day event which will begin on May 31 began with the official inauguration on Friday under the aegis of the New Mangaluru Port Authority, which also serves as the title sponsor of the event.

Venkat Raman Akkaraju, Chairman, New Mangalore Port Authority expressed his excitement about the partnership with the 5th Indian Open of Surfing.

“Supporting surfing, one of the fastest growing water sports nationally and globally, is an opportunity we can’t pass up,” he said.

“Surfing has transformative potential for the region, establishing Mangalore as the premier destination for adventure enthusiasts. This, in turn, significantly boosts the local economy and empowers local communities. Us Proud to be part of an initiative that brings multifaceted benefits to the region,” added H.

Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan highlighted the long-term support of the Karnataka government and Karnataka Tourism for surfing.

"This support encourages more people to visit beautiful places like Sasithithal and explore what the state can offer in terms of tourism development," he said.

The organizers expressed their appreciation for the growing popularity of surfin' in India. As the tournament gets underway, expectations have risen for India to rise in the global surfing scene.
