Port Blair: An estimated 56.87 per cent of the total 3,15,148 voters in Andaman and Nicobar Islands exercised their franchise till 5 pm on Friday for the Union Territory's lone Lok Sabha seat, an official said.

Speaking to Returning Officer Arjun Sharma said, "It was good to see that despite the heat and humid weather, voters turned up in large numbers, including the elderly and physically challenged. Each ballot paper is a testament to unity and participation. Voting is 7 pm." "Will continue till 10 o'clock." ,

"So far, polling is going on peacefully. The most challenging part was to ensure polling arrangements for the soldiers deployed at the Look Out Posts (LOPs), which are remote and in the middle of the open sea. A total of 12 candidates, including two women and five independents, are in the fray.

The main contest is between BJP's Bishnu Pad Ray and Congress's sitting MP Kuldeep Ra Sharma.

The Andaman Nicobar Islands parliamentary constituency consists of three districts and nine tehsils.
