Itanagar, Amid reports of violence from some districts of Arunachal Pradesh, more than 53 per cent of the 8.92 lakh voters cast their votes till 3 pm on Friday in the northeastern state, where voting is underway for two Lok Sabha seats and 50 assembly constituencies. . A clash broke out between supporters of two candidates near a polling booth in Bamen constituency of East Kameng district, Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Chukhu Apa said, adding that the situation has come under control and voting is underway.



Incidents of damage to EVMs were also reported from three polling stations in Is Kameng, Kurung Kumey and Upper Subansiri districts, the police officer said.

Voting there resumed after the machines were replaced and the situation is "peaceful now", he said.Voting percentage was normal in the morning due to inclement weather, but improved later in the day.



Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Pawan Kumar Sen said voting was delayed in the morning at some polling stations as electronic voting machines (EVMs) developed technical glitches and the machines were later replaced.



The ruling BJP has already won ten seats unopposed in the 60-member assembly.



Union Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju, Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein exercised their franchise this morning.



Officials said Rijiju cast his vote at his village Nafra in the newly created Bichom district, while Khandu exercised his franchise at a government secondary school in Bomba in Mukto constituency of Tawang district, from where he did his schooling.Meen also exercised his franchise in Chaukham.

Governor Lieutenant General (retd) KT Pernaik and his wife Anagha Pernaik cast their vote at Polling Station-1 at P Sector Government Secondary School here.

"I cast my vote as a constitutional privilege and I appeal to all voters in the state to exercise their franchise and make our democracy successful," the governor told reporters.

A total of 8,92,694 voters will decide the electoral fate of 133 candidates contesting the Assembly elections and 14 contesting the Lok Sabha elections.

Eight candidates, including Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and State Congress President Nabam Tuki, are in the fray for the Arunachal West parliamentary seat.Sitting BJP MP Tapir Gao and state Congress vice president Bosiram Siram are among the six candidates contesting from Arunachal East.



The CEO said, as per reports received from various districts, voting was "so far peaceful".

The 2019 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, which were held simultaneously, saw a record 83.33 per cent voter turnout in the state.

Counting of votes for the assembly elections will take place on June 2, while the Lok Sabha elections are to be held on June 4.
