Itanagar: A 51-foot tall statue of sage Parashurama, considered one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu, will be built at 'Parashurama Kund', a holy place on the banks of river Lohit in Arunachal Pradesh. An official gave this information on Tuesday. ,

The official said the state government is trying to develop 'Parshuram Kund' in Lohit district as a major pilgrimage site in the north-eastern regions.

Under the Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive scheme of the central government, a grant of Rs 37.87 crore has been allocated to develop the site, he said.

The project includes installing a 51-foot statue of sage Parshuram, which will be donated by VIPRA Foundation, an organization dedicated to developing the Kund.

The official said the statue will be installed at the sacred site on the banks of river Lohit, which attracts lakhs of devotees who take a holy dip during Makar Sankranti.

Parshuram Kund has great significance in Hindu mythology and its development is aimed at increasing accessibility and promoting spiritual tourism.

Legend has it that at the time of his father's initiation, Parashurama had killed his mother and because of his sin, the ax from which he had taken it got stuck in his hand. On the advice of some sages, he wandered throughout the Himalayas to atone for this. After washing his hands in the water of Lohit river, the ax fell from his hand.

State Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Meen is overseeing the project at Parshuram Kund, the official said.
