Beijing [China]: A tornado struck a city in eastern China, resulting in the death of five people and injuries to nearly 100 others, CNN reported on Saturday, quoting Xinhua news agency.

The powerful storm caused considerable destruction, with roofs torn from homes and trees uprooted, with debris scattered through the air.

According to CNN, the incident was captured on video and shared on social media, showing the extent of the damage.

"The tornado occurred due to severe infectious weather," the Dongming County Emergency Management Bureau said. He said the local government had set up a command center and launched emergency response operations.

Citing Xinhua news agency, CNN reported that 2,820 houses were damaged by the tornado in Kaiyuan, Shandong province.

Emergency services are currently carrying out "post-disaster disposal and clean-up on site", the bureau said.

Although tornadoes are relatively rare in China, averaging fewer than 100 per year, they can still have significant impacts.

According to researchers, tornadoes have killed at least 1,772 people in the country in the last 50 years since 1961.

In fact, a few months ago, a tornado struck the southern city of Guangzhou, resulting in the deaths of at least five people and injuring 33 others, as reported by Chinese state media.

Earlier this month, the China Meteorological Administration released its annual 'Blue Book' on the climate change situation in the country.

The report found that the country experienced its hottest year since 1901 and "extreme weather and climate events become more frequent and severe."

Meanwhile, other parts of China are battling extreme weather conditions.

Severe drought and record-breaking temperatures in the north are causing widespread devastation, while heavy rainfall in the south is causing floods and flash floods.
