Herianto, head of the provincial search and rescue office, said on Monday that the number of residents declaring their family members missing following the natural disaster in Bon Bolango regency has increased, Xinhua news agency reported.

"Residents continue to report missing family members. So far, 46 people have been declared missing," Haryanto told Xinhua news agency.

He said the victims included miners and villagers who provided supplies to the miners, all of whom lived in camps within the mining area.

“The incident occurred when they were sleeping or resting in the camps,” he said.

According to him, the natural disaster struck amid heavy rains on Saturday midnight, with 24 people surviving the incident.

He said a joint rescue team comprising 230 personnel has been sent to various locations where many victims are feared trapped.

He said search and rescue efforts have been hampered by heavy rains and challenging access to mining areas, preventing the deployment of heavy machinery.
