Kohima: At least four people have died and more than 40 houses have been damaged in Nagaland following Cyclone Remal, a senior official said.

A seven-year-old boy drowned in Laruri village of Meluri sub-division following heavy rains under the influence of the cyclone, while two other incidents of drowning were reported from Doyang Dam in Wokha district on Monday, he said.

The official said that an elderly man was crushed to death after a wall collapsed in Reikiju ward of Phek district.

He said the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has received reports of extensive damage to houses and properties from across the state, including Chuchuyimlong village in Mokokchung district, Noksen subdivision under Tuenson district and Awotsakili village in Zunheboto district.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel have been deployed for rescue and relief operations.

"For the first time in the history of the state, an underwater drone was pressed into service by NSDMA for search operations," the official said.

He said that due to continuous rain on Tuesday, landslide also occurred in Kikaruma village of Phek district.

Cyclone Remal made landfall on the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh around midnight on Sunday with devastating wind speeds.
