Heavy rain occurred in the county from 8 am to 8 pm. Landslides, floods and mud flows began on June 16, Xinhua news agency reported.

Since entering the flood season on April 4, Pingyuan's cumulative rainfall has reached 1,221.6 mm, almost double the normal level of the period in previous years.

"This is the worst flood the village has ever seen," said Qiu Zhimiao, 42, of Daxin village in Pingyuan.

Preliminary figures show that about 55,388 people have been affected in the county and 2,247 houses have collapsed. Direct economic losses are estimated at about 5.85 billion yuan (about $822 million).

Rescue, disaster relief and post-disaster reconstruction efforts are underway.
