Mathura (UP): Thirty-six people fell ill at different places here after consuming food items made from poor quality buckwheat flour used during Navratri fasting, officials said on Wednesday.

With the nine-day fast of 'Chaitra Navratri' beginning on Tuesday, many people who ate 'puri' and 'pakodas' made from 'buckwheat flour' complained of vomiting, nausea and diarrhea and were admitted to various hospitals.

According to Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. Ajay Kumar Verma, so far 36 people have been admitted to various hospitals in the district.

District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar Singh said that 14 people are undergoing treatment in the district hospital.

After visiting the district hospital, the DM said that information is also being collected from other places to find out if anyone else has fallen ill due to the same reason.

On Tuesday, we received information that some people in Vikas Nagar Mahendra Nagar and Dwarikesh Nagar areas of the district complained of health problems after consuming food items made from buckwheat flour purchased from a shopkeeper and were admitted to a government hospital.DM said, he is undergoing treatment and is now out of danger.

The DM said it seemed that the flour consumed by the hospitalized persons was of poor quality and had become poisonous.

"We will take strict legal action against all such shopkeepers. In the case of Dwarikesh Nagar, a case is being registered against the shopkeeper from where the flour was purchased," he said.

CMO Verma said that so far 36 people have been admitted to various hospitals in the district.It has come to light that the people who fell ill in Mahendra Nagar had purchased flour from the same shopkeeper in Kishi Mandi market from where the people of Vikas Nagar had purchased.

CMO said that nine people from Adding village of Govardhan area are undergoing treatment in a private hospital and six other people from Bati village have been admitted to the Joint District Hospital in Vrindavan. He told that some other people are being treated in private hospitals. He said that the condition of all the people admitted is improving.

The DM said that health department teams have been sent to all such places to provide necessary treatment.He said that apart from this, the investigation team of the Food and Drug Department has also been asked to collect samples of these items and send them for testing.
