A day after the announcement of panchayat elections in Agartala, Tripura, 33 candidates of the Left Front submitted their nomination papers for West Tripura District Council and South Tripura District Council seats, a party leader said on Thursday.

Senior CPI(M) leader Pabitra Kar said 33 Left Front candidates submitted their papers for the two district councils before the returning officer. "This marks the beginning of our nomination submission. We are planning to file nomination papers for all seats in the three-tier panchayats by July 18, the last date of nomination," he said.

Addressing a rally, opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhary criticized the prevailing situation in the northeastern state under BJP rule, and alleged increase in smuggling, human trafficking and institutional corruption.

He urged the State Election Commission (SEC) to ensure free, fair and transparent elections in the three-tier panchayat system.

"I appeal to everyone to unite against the BJP in these elections to protect democracy, especially in the changed political scenario after the Lok Sabha elections. Despite hopes of winning over 400 seats, the saffron party is barely able to form the government in Delhi. Succeeded in making it." He commented.
